Application procedure for exchange and degree-seeking students for the academic year 2022-2023

When to apply?
Degree-seeking students can apply from the 26th of April 2022 (10 AM local time).
! Note: you don't need your certificate of enrolment when you apply. You can deliver the document to the Housing Department when you receive it.

Exchange students from the fall semester can apply for a room starting from the 7th of June 2022 (10 AM local time).
Exchange students from the spring semester can apply from the 4th of October 2022 (10 AM local time).

Application process

  1. You can apply online and submit your room preferences via our application tool: opkot.arteveldehogeschool.be
  2. Students who applied on time, giving all the necessary information as required, will receive an option on student housing through our service. Other candidates will be referred to the private renting market in Ghent.
  3. When a room has been allocated, you will be asked to sign the housing contract and house rules and to pay the deposit of 600 EUR plus two months' rental fee. Only then the room is reserved for you.

Important information on the application process

  • The application is only available for students studying at our University or for students coming on a work placement for a term, in which case our University established the work placement.
  • Applying doesn't mean that you automatically will have a room: the number of rooms available is limited!!
  • When choosing a double room (Bagatten or Savaan), or a duo studio (Savaan or Baudelo), both candidates fill out the application for themselves and give up their roommate's name.

Renting on the private market in Ghent

If you want to rent a student room in Ghent, we advise starting your search on the private market as early as possible. This is because the demand for student rooms is more significant than the supply in our city.

The rent price in Ghent averages from €400 per month for a standard room to €600 per month for a studio with bathroom and cooking facilities (utility costs included). Make sure you know if there are other extra costs or final settlements (e.g. gas, water, electricity, internet, maintenance, etc.) before signing the lease agreement for the room.

The landlord will probably ask you to pay a security deposit before the start of the lease. The amount is maximum equal to two months' rental fee. Your security deposit will be refunded at the end of the lease if the room is in its original state. You can pay the security deposit through international transfer (use the IBAN and BIC or SWIFT codes).

Good (and reliable) websites to find student housing:

SCAMMING! Be aware of internet fraud, especially when you find an offer via social media. In case of doubt, don't hesitate to contact the Housing Department in advance.
If the offer is too good to be true, it probably ISN'T true.

Accommodation grant

A grant for students in dorms who meet three conditions: you are a degree-seeking student, your rental contract is at least eight months, AND you fulfill all 3 conditions to be able to obtain a scholarship, a partial scholarship or non-scholarship from the Flemish Government with an income of maximum 7 500 euros above the maximum limit to receive a student grant.

You must submit your application for 2022-2023 between the 15th of November 2022 and the 1st of June 2023.
Want to know more? Contact the student support member of your study program. You can find the contact details here.

Subletting (for degree-seeking students only)

Do you stop studying halfway through the academic year?
Are you leaving for a (foreign) internship?

Look for a subleaser who takes over your room. You can advertise your room through Kotatgent, the City of Ghent's platform for student housing.
You can also advertise your room on Dinar.
