Audiology Students and Lecturers Help Athletes at Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi
Last week, a delegation of 114 Belgian athletes participated in the Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi. Several Audiology students accompanied them, so they could offer the athletes a hearing screening.
Artevelde University College is involved in the Healthy Athletes Program, the (para)medical program of the Special Olympics. 'Special Olympics offers athletes with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to have their health screened', explains lecturer Melina Willems. 'Communication issues are sometimes wrongly associated with an intellectual disability. Our screening often shows that it actually concerns hearing loss.'
Volunteers of the Year
Audiology students Hanna Van der meeren, Britt Van Capellen and An-Sophie Ringoot travelled to the United Arab Emirates to help performing the screenings. Special Olympics nominated them as volunteers of the year, which means they get to participate in the closing ceremony parade. Quite an honour!
