Information for new students

I'm a Ukrainian citizen. Can I transfer from my home country to Artevelde University of Applied Sciences and continue my studies there?

At Artevelde University of Applied Sciences we have 5 Bachelor programmes taught in English (Programmes | Artevelde University of Applied Sciences | artevelde-uas.be) and several associate degree, bachelor and advanced bachelor programmes taught in Dutch (Opleidingen | Arteveldehogeschool Gent). For these programmes we always ask for proof of language of instruction (English/Dutch) at level B2 upon application.

The application deadline for new students from Ukraine is postponed from 1 May 2022 to 1 September 2022 (new application deadline). When you meet our admission requirements and you have the temporary protection status, the tuition fee for academic year 2022-2023 will be maximum € 979.60 and after approval of your application our colleagues from Student Services can even verify for you if you are entitled to obtain a scholarship for academic year 2022-2023 and if that is the case your tuition fee for academic year 2022-2023 will be €115.80 in total.

I am a Ukrainian citizen and I want to come to Belgium to study. I do not have a residence permit/visa. Which steps should I take?

Ukrainian candidate students (with a valid biometric Ukrainian passport) can travel visa-free as a tourist within the border-free Schengen Area and upon arrival in Belgium they can apply for the temporary protection status.

I am a Russian/Belarussian citizen and want to come to Belgium to study. Which steps should I take regarding my residence permit?

I have financial problems

You can contact our Office of Student Support if you encounter financial difficulties. They will support you and help you in an atmosphere of trust. If regular banking is disturbed, you can consider alternatives such as Wise, PaySend, Union Pay, JCB.

I'm struggling emotionally. Where can I find help and talk about my concerns?

You can contact our Office of Student Support if you want someone to talk to and need individual moral support in a confidential setting.

My stay is coming to an end and I want to extend my stay. What are the possibilities?

  • You extend your stay because your studies at Artevelde University of Applied Sciences are still ongoing. Please contact the Migration Office in Ghent or the municipality of your place of residence.
  • You can also extend your stay in Belgium by applying for a search/orientation year, which can provide you more time to look for work after your studies or to start up an independent business in Belgium.
  • The Immigration Office will show discernment and will be attentive to Russian/Belarussian citizens temporarily prevented from returning to Russia/Belarus, or who had a project in Belgium (studies, work, family reunion). Russian/Belarussian citizens who have arrived legally in Belgium and who, due to the disruption of air connections from several European countries to Russia/Belarus, are prevented from leaving Belgium when their visa expires, may request the authorisation to extend their stay in Belgium until there is a possibility for them to return from Belgium or another Schengen state more information.
  • As a Russian/Belarussian national, you can apply for international protection (‘asylum’) in Belgium. You will be treated equally as any other asylum seeker.
  • Even if your studies have come to an end, your residence permit or visa can be extended if the situation in Ukraine does not allow a safe return. You have to contact the municipality of your place of residence for more information.
