Application procedure for exchange and degree seeking students

When to apply?
Registrations start the 1st of June 2021 (9AM) for degree seeking students and the 8th of June (9AM) for exchange students.

Application process

  1. You can apply online and submit your room preferences via our application tool.
  2. Students who applied on time giving all the necessary information as required, will receive an option on student housing through our service. Other candidates will be referred to the private renting market in Ghent.
  3. When a room has been allocated, you will be asked to sign the housing contract and house rules and to pay the deposit of 500 EUR plus two months rental fee. Only then the room is reserved for you.

Important information on the application process

  • The application is only available for students studying at our University or for students coming on a work placement for a term in which case the work placement was established by our University.
  • Applying doesn't mean that you automatically will have a room: the number of rooms available is limited.
  • When choosing a double room (Bagatten or Savaan), or a duo studio (Savaan or Baudelo), only one candidate fills out the application for both himself and the roommate.

Renting on the private market in Ghent

If you want to rent a student room in Ghent, we advise you to start your search on the private market as early as possible. The demand for student rooms is bigger than the supply in our city.

The prices to rent a room in Ghent average from €400 per month for a standard room up to €600 per month for a studio with bathroom and cooking facilities (utility costs included). Make sure that you know if there are other extra costs or final settlements (e.g. gas, water, electricity, internet, maintenance, etc.) prior to signing the lease agreement for the room.

The landlord will probably ask you to pay a security deposit before the start of the lease. The amount is maximum equal to two months rental fee. Your security deposit will be refunded at the end of the lease if the room is in its original state. The security deposit can be paid through international transfer (use the IBAN and BIC or SWIFT codes).

Good websites to find student housing:

Be aware of internet fraud, especially when you find an offer via social media. In case of doubt, please contact the Housing Department in advance.
Never pay a deposit in cash.

Your application for year 2020-2021 must be submitted between the 13th of November 2020 and the 1st of June 2021.
